島を守る神様 ― 厳島神社**

神社の手前に立つ大鳥居は、紀元2600年（神武天皇即位以来）を記念して、昭和15年に建立されたものです。
その奥には、小さな鳥居の双脚だけが今も残されています。

この鳥居は、かつて漁場請負人であった栖原家の番人、山田太三郎によって寄贈されました。
島の東側の海岸に建てられ、その地は「弁天崎」と名付けられました。
鳥居の双脚の裏には「天保十五年五月」の刻印が残っています。

厳島神社の祭神は「宗像三女神」。
当時は神仏習合の時代であり、弁財天とも習合していたことから、
この地は弁天崎と呼ばれるようになったのでしょう。

この鳥居は、神殿にある鰐口（1830年作）とともに、
町の有形文化財にも指定されています。

この神社には、四柱の女神が鎮まっています。
きっと、にぎやかで華やかなことでしょう。

The Guardian Deities of the Island — Itsukushima Shrine**

The large torii gate standing at the entrance to the shrine was erected in 1940
to commemorate the 2600th year since the legendary accession of Emperor Jimmu.
Farther inside, only the twin pillars of a smaller torii remain.

This earlier torii was donated by Yamada Tasaburō,
a steward of the Sakaehara family, who were fishing ground contractors at the time.
It was originally built on the eastern shore of the island,
and the place came to be known as Benten Cape.
An inscription on the back of the pillars reads,
“An auspicious day in May, Tenpō 15 (1844).”

The enshrined deities of Itsukushima Shrine are the Munakata Three Goddesses.
In those days, Shinto and Buddhism were syncretized,
and Benzaiten was worshiped together with them—
hence the name Benten Cape.

This torii, along with the shrine’s waniguchi
(a large ceremonial gong made in 1830),
has been designated as a tangible cultural property of the town.

Four goddesses dwell within this shrine.
One can only imagine how lively and radiant it must be.
